Trekking in the Himalayas has gained a lot of popularity in the recent past. With the pandemic forcing people to work from home, a lot of people are travelling to the mountains and taking refuge there for a week or two.

This rush to the Himalayas has also resulted in a lot of people opting to go for treks in search of scenic views and a perfect click to post on social media. The picturesque mountains in Himachal Pradesh are home to a lot of treks and is regarded as one of the best places in the world to do trekking.

Indrahar Pass is located at an altitude of 14,245 ft above sea level and offers a majestic view of the Kangra Valley. You can see Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj from here very clearly. Indrahar Pass is located in the Dhauladhar Range and is extremely popular among tourists because it is quite close to Dharamshala.

This trek originates from McLeod Ganj and will take you through the majestic beauty of the Himalayas. Apart from this, you will also get a chance to explore Lahesh Caves as it lies in the route to the pass.

This trek can be completed within 4 days and can prove to be a bit difficult if you are a complete beginner.

Try Triund, it is one of the easiest treks which one can go to in Himachal Pradesh. With a total distance of 9 km, Triund is located close to McLeod Ganj and can be reached within a day’s time. The Triund top offers an enthralling view of the Dhauladhar range and Kangra Valley on either side.

The trek route to the top goes through the forest of Oak, Rhododendrons and Deodar. Don’t forget to take your DSLR camera with you as the night sky looks absolutely beautiful after the sunsets.

Bhrigu Lake trek is a high altitude trek with the highest elevation point of trek reaching an elevation of 14,100 ft. The lake gets its name after Maharishi Bhrigu who used to meditate near this lake.

Bhrigu Lake has different appearances in different seasons. In summers and spring, the lake is blue and changes its colour throughout the day and in winters it is completely frozen.

The trek to Bhrigu Lake starts near Gulaba with an altitude of 8,530 ft and reaches a maximum altitude of 14,100 ft.

After reaching the summit you can go and visit Parvati Kund, which is a hot water spring and take a dip there. The trek originates from Kullu valley and you can reach the starting point by taking a taxi from the Kullu bus stand.

Beas Kund is of religious importance for Hindus as it is believed that Sage Vyas used to take bath in this lake and meditate near it while writing the epic Mahabharata.

Prashar Lake is located deep inside Kullu Valley and can be reached within a days time. With an altitude of 8,900 ft, this lake lies close to the district of Mandi.

Near the lake, the Prashar Rishi Temple is located which is built in honour of Rishi Prashar. From the top, you get a 180-degree view of the Pir Panjal, Kinnaur and Dhauladhar ranges.

Pin Parvati Pass was discovered in 1884 as a route to reach Spiti Valley. It is one of the most exhilarating and challenging treks to do in Himachal Pardesh.

This trek requires prior experience for trekking in the Himalayas  and is not advisable for beginners. Manali is the closest town to the starting point of this trek. The Pin Parvati Pass offers the most iconic views of the Himalayas and connects Spiti Valley with Kullu Valley.

This is a relatively long trek spanning over 110 km which can take anywhere between 10-11 days to complete.

Trekking Seasons

Now that I have provided you with a list of treks which you can do in the Himalayas, I also want to mention some specific seasons for trekking if you want to enjoy snow or greenery.

To experience snow: Try targeting the months from November end to early April. You can find abundant snow on the peaks if you do trekking in this time period.

To experience lush greenery: You probably want to target the monsoon season i.e June to September. But it is highly advisable to avoid trekking in the monsoon season as the risk of landslides and other natural calamities is extremely high.

To experience spring: Try to visits the Himalayas in the months of March and April to experience blooming flora.
