Quick Answer

HeyGen is an AI video creation platform that helps users create videos using prompts, avatars, voices, scripts, captions, and visual styles. In our hands-on test, we used HeyGen to create an animation video about how to recognize fake reviews. The platform converted our basic prompt into a video plan titled “How to Detect Fake Reviews.”

The generated plan included a script summary, clean animation style, avatar, voice, captions, landscape format, and an estimated duration of 54 seconds. Based on our test, HeyGen is useful for marketers, educators, review websites, agencies, SaaS teams, and business owners who want to create professional-looking AI videos without filming themselves.

What We Wanted to Test

The goal of this hands-on test was to check how HeyGen works for a first-time user. We wanted to see whether the platform could take a simple topic idea and turn it into a usable AI video plan.

We tested four main things:

Testing AreaWhat We Checked
Ease of startingCan users create a video from one prompt?
Login experienceHow smooth is the sign-up and magic link process?
OnboardingDoes HeyGen ask useful setup questions?
AI video outputDoes the tool generate a proper video plan, script, avatar, voice, and style?

The test topic was:

“Create an animation video of how to recognize fake reviews.”

This topic was selected because it is practical for review websites, consumer awareness content, SaaS blogs, and educational videos.

Test Setup

For this test, we did not upload any video, image, script, or brand file. We only used HeyGen’s prompt-based video creation flow.

This helped us check how much work HeyGen can do automatically from a basic idea.

Step 1: Starting With HeyGen’s “Say It With Video” Screen

The first screen showed the heading:

Say it with video

Below it, HeyGen described itself as an all-in-one agent for video creation. The main area had a large prompt box where we entered our video idea.

What We Entered

create an animation video of how to recognize fake reviews

Our Observation

This screen is beginner-friendly. A user does not need to know video editing, scriptwriting, voiceover, or animation. They can simply describe what they want. The auto options are useful because they reduce the number of decisions at the beginning.

HeyGen lets users start with a simple prompt and keeps avatar, voice, and style selection automatic for beginners.

Step 2: Login and Sign-Up Experience

After clicking Submit, HeyGen asked us to log in before continuing. The login popup showed multiple sign-in methods.

We selected the email option.

After entering the email address, HeyGen showed the button:

Send a secure magic link

Then HeyGen sent a login email with the message:

Welcome to HeyGen!

The email included a button:

Log in with magic link

image 37 - How to Use HeyGen AI: Full Hands-On Testing and Review

Our Observation

The magic link login is simple because users do not need to create or remember a password. However, it does interrupt the video creation flow because the user must leave HeyGen, open email, and click the login link.

HeyGen requires account login before completing the video creation flow. The email magic link option is simple, but it adds one extra step for first-time users.

Step 3: Onboarding Questions

After logging in, HeyGen showed onboarding questions. These questions help the platform understand the user’s purpose and video use case.

Onboarding Question 1: What Do You Want to Create?

image 36 - How to Use HeyGen AI: Full Hands-On Testing and Review

HeyGen showed these options:

Option
Social Media
Ads
Education & Training Videos
Product Demos
Internal Communications
Video Translations
Other

For this test, we selected:

Social Media

Why This Matters

This helps HeyGen understand the expected format and purpose of the video. Social media videos usually need short duration, clear visuals, captions, and direct messaging.

HeyGen asks users what they want to create so it can understand whether the video is for social media, ads, training, product demos, internal communication, or translation.

Onboarding Question 2: What Is Your Role?

image 38 - How to Use HeyGen AI: Full Hands-On Testing and Review

HeyGen showed these options:

Option
Marketing
Sales
Education & Training
Educator / Student
Business Owner
Content Creator
Developer
Other

For this test, we selected:

Education & Training

Why This Matters

The selected role can influence the type of content HeyGen prepares. Since our video topic was about identifying fake reviews, the Education & Training role matched the topic well.

The role selection helps HeyGen understand the user’s content style. Education & Training is a good fit for explainer videos and awareness content.

Onboarding Question 3: Which Best Describes You as a Creator?

image 39 - How to Use HeyGen AI: Full Hands-On Testing and Review

HeyGen showed these options:

Option
I run my own business or work independently
I work at a company or as part of a team
I’m just trying things out for fun or learning
I want to automate my content creation

For this test, we selected:

I work at a company or as part of a team

Why This Matters

This helps HeyGen understand whether the user is an individual creator, company user, learner, or someone trying to automate video creation.

HeyGen uses creator-type questions to personalize the video workflow for individuals, teams, learners, and automation-focused users.

Step 4: Pricing Screen Shown During Testing

image 41 - How to Use HeyGen AI: Full Hands-On Testing and Review

After onboarding, HeyGen displayed the pricing plan screen. The visible plans were Free, Creator, and Pro.

Pricing Plans Shown in Our Test

Free      | ███ 3 videos/month

Creator   | ██████████████████████████████ 600 credits

Pro       | ██████████████████████████████████████████████████ 1,000 credits

Our Observation

The pricing page is visually clear because each plan is shown in a separate column. The Free plan is useful for testing. Creator and Pro plans are better for regular creators who need more credits, longer videos, faster processing, and better export quality.

However, the credit system may not be fully clear to beginners. Users should check how credits are used before upgrading.

HeyGen clearly shows Free, Creator, and Pro plans, but users should understand the credit system before choosing a paid plan.

Step 5: AI Video Plan Generation

After setup, HeyGen started creating the video plan. The workspace showed progress on the left side.

Our Observation

This part is useful because HeyGen does not just show a loading screen. It explains what the AI is doing step by step. This makes the process feel more transparent.

HeyGen shows each stage of the AI video creation process, including planning, image generation, narrator selection, and voice generation.

Step 6: Generated Video Plan Output

image 42 - How to Use HeyGen AI: Full Hands-On Testing and Review

HeyGen generated a video plan titled:

How to Detect Fake Reviews

The preview image included star ratings, a magnifying glass, and the title. This visual matched the topic because fake reviews are often connected with star ratings and online product feedback.

Generated Output Breakdown

FieldOutput Shown
TitleHow to Detect Fake Reviews
ScriptA helpful guide on identifying deceptive online reviews to help consumers shop smarter
StyleModern professional animation with a clean color palette and clear motion graphics
AvatarSophia
VoiceEngaging corporate-style voice

CaptionsEnabled

Our Observation

HeyGen improved the original prompt by converting it into a cleaner video title. Instead of keeping the wording “recognize fake reviews,” it created the title “How to Detect Fake Reviews.” This sounds more professional and works better for a video.

HeyGen created a complete video plan with title, script summary, animation style, avatar, voice, duration, format, language, and captions.

Step 7: Script, Style, Avatar, and Voice Review

Before final video generation, HeyGen showed the main creative settings. This included the script, style, avatar, voice, and video details.

What Was Visible

SectionDetails
ScriptShort summary explaining how to identify fake reviews
StyleModern professional animation
AvatarSophia
VoiceEngaging corporate-style voice
Duration54 seconds

Why This Screen Is Important

This screen is useful because users can review the video before generating the final version. If the script is too basic, the avatar does not match the brand, or the voice feels unsuitable, users can edit the video plan before spending credits.

HeyGen gives users a preview of the main video setup before final generation, including script, style, avatar, voice, format, language, duration, and captions.

Best Part of the Test

The best part was that HeyGen converted a simple idea into a structured video plan without needing a manual script. This makes the tool helpful for users who have content ideas but do not know how to turn them into videos.

What Felt Limited in Our HeyGen Test

LimitationWhy It Matters
Login required before full useSlows down the first test
Magic link stepUser must open email before continuing
Onboarding adds extra clicksNot instant for first-time users

Credit system needs understandingBeginners may not know how many videos they can create
Auto output may need editingBrand-specific content needs manual checking

Main Limitation

The main limitation is not the video plan quality. The bigger issue is the first-time flow. Users need to go through login, onboarding, and pricing before fully reaching the generated video workspace.

Final Verdict

HeyGen performed well in our hands-on test. It successfully turned a short prompt into a structured AI video plan with a title, script summary, style, avatar, voice, duration, format, language, and captions.

The best part of HeyGen is its speed. Users can start with one simple idea and get a ready video direction within minutes. This is useful for marketers, educators, SaaS companies, agencies, review websites, and business owners who want to create videos without recording themselves.

The main drawback is the first-time setup flow. Users need to complete login, onboarding, and pricing review before reaching the full video workspace. Also, the credit system should be checked carefully before upgrading.

Overall, HeyGen is a strong AI video creation tool for explainer videos, training videos, social media clips, product demos, and business communication. For a topic like “How to Detect Fake Reviews,” it created a useful and professional first draft with minimal manual effort.
