Sunra promises a single API key that unlocks image, video, audio, and 3D model generation — all at the maker’s own price with zero markup. I dug into the numbers to see if the claim holds up.
If you’ve built anything with generative AI recently, you know the pain. Seedance for video, OpenAI for images, separate providers for audio and 3D. Each one means a new account, a new API key, a new billing dashboard, and a new set of docs to read at 2 a.m. when something breaks.
Sunra’s pitch is simple: stop doing all of that. Use one API, one key, one invoice — and pay each model’s maker price with no added margin.
That’s a bold claim, so I checked the receipts.
What Sunra Actually Is
Sunra is a unified API gateway for generative AI models. It sits between you and the model providers — Seedance, Kling, OpenAI, Google, and others — and routes your requests to the maker’s infrastructure. You get back the same output you’d get calling the maker directly.
It covers four modalities through a single integration:
- Image generation — GPT Image 2.5, Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana Pro, Seedream 5.0 Pro, and more
- Video generation — Seedance 2.5, Kling 4.0 (with audio)
- Audio generation — Voice synthesis and sound effects
- 3D model generation — Text-to-3D and image-to-3D
No subscription. No monthly minimum. Pure pay-as-you-go.
The Pricing: Does “Zero Markup” Actually Mean Zero?
This is the part that matters most, so I pulled the public list prices from Sunra, fal, and Higgsfield and compared them against what each maker charges directly on their own API. Prices were read between 22–27 October 2026.
Sunra API vs other platforms — pricing comparison table
Here’s what I found:
| Model | Maker’s Price | Sunra | fal | Higgsfield |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seedance 2.5 (720p, audio) | $0.231/s | $0.231/s ✅ | $0.462/s (2×) | $0.462/s (2×) |
| Kling 4.0 (720p, audio) | $0.157/s | $0.157/s ✅ | $0.157/s ✅ | $0.157/s ✅ |
| GPT Image 2.5 (1024×1024) | $0.0527 | $0.0527 ✅ | $0.0527 ✅ | $0.0527 ✅ |
| Nano Banana 2.1 (1K) | $0.034 | $0.034 ✅ | $0.0395 (+16%) | No API |
| Nano Banana Pro (1K) | $0.134 | $0.134 ✅ | $0.15 (+12%) | No API |
| Seedream 5.0 Pro (2K) | $0.09 | $0.09 ✅ | $0.135 (+50%) | No API |
The verdict: Sunra matched the maker’s price on every model I checked. Not “close to” — exactly equal. Meanwhile, fal adds noticeable markups on several models (up to 2× on Seedance 2.5), and Higgsfield simply doesn’t carry three of the six models I compared.
That’s genuinely impressive. Most aggregator platforms make money on the spread, so the obvious question is: how does Sunra sustain this? The company says the business model doesn’t rely on per-request margins, though they haven’t publicly detailed the alternative. Something to keep an eye on — a service that underprices everyone indefinitely needs a viable path to revenue.
The Developer Experience
From a practical standpoint, the value isn’t just pricing — it’s consolidation. Instead of maintaining integrations with half a dozen providers, you maintain one. That means:
- One set of auth credentials to manage and rotate
- One SDK / HTTP endpoint to learn
- One invoice for finance and procurement to process
- One rate-limit policy to understand (rather than six different ones)
For indie developers or small teams, this cuts real setup time. For larger teams, the single-vendor invoice alone can simplify procurement and compliance.
What I Like
- Pricing transparency is real. The maker-price claim checks out across every model I tested.
- Modality breadth. Image, video, audio, and 3D through one key is rare. Most competitors focus on one or two.
- No subscription lock-in. Pay-as-you-go means you can walk away at any time. There’s no “use it or lose it” monthly credit to justify.
- Model coverage. Sunra offers models (Nano Banana, Seedream 5.0 Pro) that some competitors don’t carry at all.
What Gives Me Pause
- Sustainability. Zero markup sounds great for users, but it raises questions about long-term viability. If Sunra’s revenue model shifts later, will pricing stay this clean?
- Latency overhead. Any gateway adds a routing layer. I didn’t benchmark latency in this review, but it’s worth testing for time-sensitive applications.
- Vendor dependency. You’re trading dependence on multiple providers for dependence on one aggregator. If Sunra goes down, everything goes down — not just one modality.
- Model freshness. When a maker launches a new model, how quickly does it show up on Sunra? Aggregators can lag behind direct APIs.
Who Should Consider It
- Developers juggling multiple AI providers who are tired of managing separate integrations and billing accounts
- Startups and side-project builders who want access to top models without committing to subscriptions or fighting credential sprawl
- Agencies and creative teams generating content across modalities who’d benefit from a single cost-transparent pipeline
- Cost-conscious teams currently using platforms like fal or Higgsfield, who could save 12–50% on certain models by switching
The Bottom Line
Sunra does exactly what it advertises: one API key, multiple modalities, maker pricing. The “no markup” claim isn’t marketing spin — the numbers back it up, at least as of October 2026.
The real question isn’t whether it works today. It’s whether this pricing model is sustainable long-term, and how quickly Sunra keeps up as new models launch. For now, though, if you’re paying a platform tax on top of maker prices, Sunra is worth a serious look.
Rating: 4 out of 5 — Delivers on its core promise convincingly. Docking one point for unanswered questions about long-term sustainability and the inherent risk of single-gateway dependency.
